Head Coach • Social Coordinator
Aaron joined the Vavi Running club in 2010 and is a self-proclaimed “Runner of the People”. His goal is to set the example that running is a sport that everyone can learn to do. He runs for the fun of it and to have a sense of self-righteousness over everyone else that sleeps in on Saturday mornings. He has completed 3 rounds of the San Diego Triple Crown series and a long list of other half marathons.
Aaron was an avid runner back in high school. Legend has it, he still holds a record from back in the glory days. All that natural athleticism was challenged when he found himself hospitalized for over a month with a life threatening lung infection. This was a life changing experience for him. After a few surgeries, a couple chest tubes and months of treatment he was left with scarring in his lung and diminished lung capacity. Not being one to shy away from a challenge, he started training again which mostly look like wheezing and walking to start but eventually developed into consistent running and completion of a sub 2 hour half marathon.
Aaron coaches the intermediate running group but is also the social coordinator for the group. He puts together regular social activities for the group. You will often see him making the rounds and chatting it up with everyone. If you are new to the club make it a point to introduce yourself and he will make sure you know a hand full of people before you leave.
Assistant Coach – Beginner/Interval Program (Winter & Spring)
Yayoi joined The VAVi Running interval running group in 2008 with the intention of completing a half marathon. After completing the La Jolla half, she realized that she only needed to train for an additional six weeks for the full marathon. So she ran the full, and then another, and became hooked on running.
She joined TVRC’s coaching staff in the fall of 2010. She recommends the Interval Program to beginner and experienced runners alike. She knows the R/W program well and lives by its approach . . . she’s set a PR numerous times using only the R/W method. She will always be your biggest cheerleader and loves seeing the achievements of the run-walkers throughout the season!
Yayoi holds degrees from Grinnell College and UCLA, and is a marketing manager for a green technology company in San Diego.
